The York County Shelter Programs is located on the beautiful and historic grounds of the Brothers of Christian Instruction on Shaker Hill Road in Alfred, Maine. The Native Americans were known to have lived on this property long before the Shakers settled there in 1764. The Shakers sold the land to the Brothers of Christian Instruction in 1931. There was always a welcoming atmosphere associated with the property. The Brothers agreed that the York County Shelter Programs could begin a residential program for the homeless on the property in 1987. In addition to the Emergency Residential Shelter on Shaker Hill Road in Alfred, there is a SRO(Single Resident Occupancy) building for five men in operation and another new SRO building for eight residents planned for construction this fall. Off the campus, York County Shelter Programs manages twenty-two houses for previously homeless individuals and families.
